Quest - The Coward's Way Out
« on: June 29, 2008, 12:21:40 PM »
Quest Name: The Coward's Way Out
Quest Giver: Deacon

Involved NPCs:

Prerequisites
Completion of Acquiring a Pass Quest Chain

How to Acquire this Quest:
After completing the Acquiring a Pass Quest Chain, Deacon will reappear and he can be found either inside or outside his house. If you come into contact with him again, he will fall to his knees and say that he promises that he will have the money tomorrow. He will then look up and say "Not you again! I don't owe you anything!". If you ask him what's wrong, he will say that he owes the City Guard bribe money or they're going to arrest him. He will say that if you help him out, there will be a reward in it for you. If you accept his offer, you receive the quest. If you reject his offer, then after you leave his house, you will not find him there again.

Description:
Deacon will run over to his table, scribble something on a piece of paper and shove it into an envelope. He will tell you NOT to open it or the City Guard will not accept it. He says he's going to lie low for today so he needs you to deliver it to the guards and then come meet him tomorrow to get your reward. He will say that he's off to lie low and then leave the house.

If you want you can open the letter now and read the contents (Contents listed below). You can now go back to Deacon's house but you will find that all his possessions are gone and he is nowhere to be found. The quest will then end. You can deliver it to the guards at the exit to the lower levels. The captain will read it out aloud. It says:

Dear Captain
The gentlemen bearing this letter has kindly agreed to settle my debt

Deacon

The Captain will ask that you hand over the 15g owed to him. If you have less than 15g or you refuse to do so, the guards will beat you up and take 15g or all that you have. They will say that you shouldn't mess with them. if you head over to Deacon's house, you will find that Deacon has fled and all his possessions are gone. The quest will end.

Hehe, I like it.  A dead-end quest! Nothing good can come from it for the player, so mischievous!

Also, if you read the letter, why does Deacon flee? How does he know you have read it? Or is he fleeing because he knows you will come back after you visit the guards?

Haha, nice one, EX. So, if you read the letter before you give it to the guards, can you prevent losing your money or giving the guards 15 g?

Mistake then. My intention was that he says he has somewhere to go and leaves immediately, regardless of your choice. What he wants, is to give you the letter, hope you deliver it, and then run off somewhere.

Yes. This would encourage the player NOT to always do what he's told. How many RPGs ever give you that option :D

I think it would certainly be quite funny if the player realizes that he got tricked because this isn't your standard delivery boy RPG :D

Yeah  ;D
That would be funny. But I just thought of something, what if the player reads the letter in the same room as Deacon? Then it would mess everything up because the player would know that Deacon was tricking him/her and Deacon wouldn't have the chance to flee because the player is still in the room. Just a thought  ;D

Edited the quest... he leaves the house straight after he gives it to you. Although in the full version, when we have a combat system, it would be great fun to kick his ass...
