Characters - The Aristocrat and Bengar the Brute

The Aristocrat

Description
The Aristocrat's true name is Oalan Merrick, though he, himself, does not use that name anymore. Aside from 'The Aristocrat,' he is also know as 'Duke Merrick' because of his formal title. He is a duke from Moltara. His father, too, was a duke though he perished long ago. His mother, also deceased, was a baroness. The Aristocrat fears little and acts like he owns the world and is above the law... And in a way, he is.

He is very secretive, and he should be. Judging by his outwardly appearance and countenance, one would surmise that he is a kind, sophisticated gentleman. But underneath his urbane manners and quick wit, underneath his cunning guise, is a cold, heartless crime lord and overzealous high-ranking member of a dangerous, power-hungry religious group (the very same group Rahl had joined when he was younger).

He is a part of this radical group, which worships the same gods as everyone else, though to a more zealous, violent level. And it is run by a corrupt board of individuals looking for power. The Aristocrat is not a part of this board, but he is quite high up in the society and he obeys them like they were kings and queens. This group uses him and his power to manipulate and control entire cities, villages and groups of people. The Aristocrat is a genius, though his intelligence is wasted on crime and the Legion of Light (the religious group). He controls most of the crime in Moltara and other cities that are not already controlled by the Black Hand. He does have many deals with the Black Hand and his crime group could even be considered friends of the Black Hand. However, the Black Hand is not associated with the Legion of Light and they want nothing to do with it.

The Aristocrat is known for his skill in manipulation. He always has others do his dirty work so nothing can be traced back to him. He shows no remorse when the people he sends on his errands die; sometimes he sends them to do these tasks knowing that they will be killed. Lives mean nothing to him if disposing of them will get a job done, unless this means his own life. Of course, his cruel criminal ways are a threat to people in his area as he often hires people off of the street to do seemingly innocent errands for him, that end up making the people he hires look like criminals themselves. He may even do this to the player.

Appearance
The Aristocrat is a Xemna. He is dressed completely in brilliant, wealthy clothes and robes to show off his wealth. He carries a scepter around wherever he goes. He has slightly orange skin and glowing turquoise eyes.

Location
The Aristocrat himself only appears in his event, in the demo. He is out on his own business during the demo, only to appear later in his quest chain in the full version.

Role in the Game
The Aristocrat is very important behind the scenes. He is a major quest NPC, though he gives his quests through his thug, Bengar.

Factors that influence his dialogue
You cannot speak with him in the demo, other than in the event.

Quests involved in
  • The Aristocrat Event
  • A Deal with the Duke

Death:
He cannot be killed in the demo. Later on, his death is the most important objective of a quest chain.

Bengar the Brute

Description
He is the Aristocrat's right-hand thug and courier. He delivers the Aristocrat's messages and does some of his dirty work. Bengar used to be a hired guard for the Aristocrat's father, and now, after his father passed away, the Aristocrat bring Bengar with him wherever he goes. He earned his epithet because of his brutish methods and because he is known to do the violent work for the Aristocrat... And because of his size.

Appearance
He is a very large Grogg (Yes... He is even considered huge to other Groggs). He has a large scar on his chest from a deep wound long ago. He does not wear extravagant clothes like his master, the Aristocrat.

Location
He can be found outside or inside the inn. Usually he is in the street outside, but he can be found in the inn having a drink at night.

Role in the Game
He is important because he is a messenger for the Aristocrat. His master speaks to you through him and gives you the quests through Bengar. Also, in the full version, to kill the Aristocrat, you must go through Bengar. Also, in the quest chain, when you turn against the Aristocrat (details later in the chain), Bengar turns against you and does whatever he can to kill you.

Factors that influence his dialogue
Your relationship with the Aristocrat is what influences his dialogue. He is very loyal and if you badmouth his master, he gets angry.

Quests involved in
  • The Aristocrat Event
  • A Deal with the Duke

Death:
He cannot be killed in the demo. He must be killed in the full version to complete a quest chain to get to the Aristocrat.

The Aristocrat seems like a pretty interesting villain after reading the introduction event. I like his condescending way of talking. I know I'd probably hate him on sight during the game :p

As for Bengar, he doesn't have too much of a personality, but that's ok because he's just a lackey... and he's just there to support the character of Merrick anyway...

Thanks, EX. Yeah, Bengar doesn't do much in the event I have because he fears and admires the Aristocrat and he is very loyal so he only speaks when the Aristocrat is around unless he is asked to. He will have more personality in the quest chain when you have to speak with him and the Aristocrat is not around.
